As astronomers push deeper into the farthest reaches of the universe, the telescopes with which astronomers observe must keep pace. When it comes to ground-based telescopes: bigger is better. Indeed several consortia around the world are racing to build the largest optical / infrared telescope. In this talk I will take a detailed look at the three main contenders for the coverted title of "largest optical telescope". I will also explore several of the major open questions in astronomy and how this new generation of extremely large telescopes will, or will not, help answer these questions.
