The Voyager 1 spacecraft was launched in September 1977 and is now 19 billion kilometers from the Sun. On August 25th, 2012, Voyager 1 detected a sudden change in the densities of energetic particles. This sudden change is the result of Voyager 1 crossing the boundary that separates the heliosphere and interstellar space. This makes Voyager 1 the first human-made object to leave the solar system. In this talk, we explore how the heliosphere is formed, from the release of energy in the centre of the Sun, through the acceleration of the solar wind, and all the way out to the edges of the solar system.
